Compress a photo for a visa application
A visa portal rejects your photo in one second, with no explanation and no way to negotiate. Get the file under the limit before that happens — without sending your passport photo to a stranger's server.
Drop images here
or browse your files — JPG, PNG, WebP. Paste works too.
Output will be at or below this size.
WebP is usually 25–35% smaller.
Caps the longest side. Leave empty to keep the original size.
Compression happens on your device. Files are never sent to a server.
Why this works
Size limits reject more applications than bad photos do
A technically perfect photo fails the upload if it is 3.2MB and the portal caps at 240KB. The rejection message is usually a single red line of text, and there is no resubmission grace period in the flow — you go back, fix the file, and start over.
Phone cameras are the main culprit. A single frame from a modern phone is routinely 3MB to 8MB, an order of magnitude above what these systems accept.
Find the official number first — do not guess
Requirements vary far more than people expect. Some countries cap at 45KB, others allow 240KB, and some specify pixel dimensions such as 600x600 in addition to a file size. The exact figure also depends on the visa type and the specific portal you are using.
Always take the number from the official page for your specific application. Anything you read elsewhere, including here, is a starting point and can be out of date. The tool itself does not care what the number is — it will hit whatever limit you give it.
Why local processing matters more here than anywhere
A visa photo is a biometric document. It is paired with your passport number, your date of birth, your address and your travel history. Uploading it to an unknown compression service means trusting that service's retention policy, its security, and its promise to delete.
This tool never transmits the file. Decoding and re-encoding happen in your browser's memory, and the result is handed straight back to you. You can watch the network tab while it runs and see nothing leave.
Which setting to use
Put the portal's limit in the target field. Leave the format on JPEG, because most government systems validate the .jpg extension specifically. Only reduce the max dimension if the official requirement also specifies pixels — otherwise leave it empty so the photo keeps its resolution.
Questions
Will compressing damage the photo for visa purposes?
Compression reduces file size by discarding fine detail, but at typical limits (200KB to 500KB) a properly lit portrait remains fully legible. Avoid very small targets such as 20KB, which can make facial features ambiguous.
The portal also requires specific pixel dimensions — can I set those?
Yes. Enter the required longest edge in the Max dimension field and the image is scaled before compression. If the requirement is expressed as width and height separately, use the larger of the two.
Is it safe to process a passport photo here?
The file never leaves your device. There is no upload, no server-side copy and no logging of file contents. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.
